I belong to a Street Photography group in Seattle. We have been meeting on Zoom for the past few years and hope to meet again in person shortly. Almost every month, there is a discussion on what constitutes street photography.

My definition is very concise. Showing people in an urban environment. Whether at an event or just random shooting on the streets. You may have another definition.

My style is simple. I load a roll of film, in this case, a roll of Kodak Ultramax 400, and for the next hour, I walk the downtown core of Seattle. I take about an hour to shoot the film. In most situations, I walk quickly through the people and looking through the viewfinder, I capture images of people from about 3′ to 5′ from me.

Things rarely come together to create a perfect image…

I came to an intersection and saw this gentleman waiting for the light to change. I had only a second or two to capture the image. After I developed the film, I noticed he had blinked at capture. Luck is very important.

Most of the time, people do not notice me. Sometimes they do. They will smile…

Or give me a look of astonishment.

These images were captured with the Nikon FA, with either the 35mm 1:2 or 28mm 1:2.8 Lenses attached. This is the fourth color roll of film I have developed.

  1. My daughter is an amazing people catcher. Her photographs are all from her vast circle of friends and family. Mainly organised photograph outdoor shoots that give her friends amazing natural captures. She has, in the past, been asked to cover local organised town events, but never actually pursued the opportunities. I often wondered if her knowing the people in the camera’s eye meant that she had relaxed subjects. There is no questioning her ability to get those one off sublime singular feature takes and also action shots too though. Her eye is a natural empathetic one. Your photographs are interesting and thought provoking in the way you describe your techniques. You capture great one offs. All the best.

    1. She probably can do it and would give the photography her personal touch that might make them unique. I do not have an empathetic touch but when editing I try to keep out an embarrassing moment and I also work to keep a good ratio of men to women in the images displayed.
