Many people love trains. While the sound of traffic, leaf blowers, air conditioners, and loud music bothers me, the train horn or whistle does not (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSRvxtA5YpM).

Last Friday, I visited the Chehalis-Centrailia Railroad and Museum. I wanted to see some of their old stock and gather images with my Pentax 645 and 645 cameras. This time of year, clouds and rain dominate the sky, so I loaded the 645N with Kentmere 400 and pushed it two stops. (https://steamtrainride.com)

The Museum offers train rides this Fall on weekends, with a holiday theme, The Polar Express. The train was pulled by a Steam Locomotive in the past, but it is currently being serviced, so a Diesel Electric Locomotive is being used. (https://steamtrainride.com/the-polar-express-train-2023/)

I mixed up a fresh batch of Diafine to develop the film. Earlier this year, I used Diafine primarily to develop my film and found it worked well with Kentmere films.

I scanned the negatives with the Epson V850, using VueScan software.

  1. An excellent set of photos, Steven—great contrast and tones across the board. Kentmere 400 pushed two stops in Diafine is clearly a superb combination. I’d actually be curious to see what happens if you pushed it three stops, under flat and dim lighting conditions, shooting at EI 3200. Based on your results at EI 1600, I actually think you’d still get phenomenal results going one stop further.
