This afternoon, I took my Nikon Z5 for shooting at Kaiser Woods. I had the 7Artisans 50mm F1.1 lens attached to the camera. I use the Fotodiox Pro M to Z adapter. (https://fotodioxpro.com/products/lm-nkz-p)

The lens is made for the Leica M mount. A few years ago, I had a couple of Voigtlander Rangefinder Cameras that used the M mount. When the cameras became a maintenance problem, I sold them and some lenses but kept the 50mm.

Though it is a fast lens, I do not usually use it faster than F/2. It has a glow effect around the image when shooting it wide open. The above image is shot at F/2. The edges are not sharp at most apertures and lots of vignetting that can be difficult to remove.

Despite all the shortcomings, I still enjoy using the lens and the look it gives images. (https://phillipreeve.net/blog/7artisans-50mm-f-1-1-review/)

Certainly panning in closely to your photographs here shows wonderful detail. Nice lens as you say. Must be difficult to have to crop a vignette, if you had to use the wider option, when you have chosen your natural framing of the subject out in the real world. I remember my old Wetzler enlarger couldn’t carry 120 format negatives, so had to choose which part of the image suited for catching at least some of the subject on the paper. All the best Steven.

I am not cropping. I am adjusting the light in those areas so I can blend it with the entire image. There are tools for that in Lightroom but with this lens the vignette is problematic. I still enjoy the lens and will use it again.

That’s cool. I have never used these new tools in earnest, so am fascinated at their abilities. My old dodging and burning seems very old school. But…..as you say re: your lens example. Even limitations can lead to fantastic results. All the best.
