It was a beautiful, cool morning in Bend, Oregon. I spent most of the morning at the High Desert Museum, which describes the high desert’s flora and fauna and the area’s anthropological history.

Surrounding the museum is a forest of Ponderosa Pines. Most of the trees show fire damage, which occurred during a prescribed burn in May 2021 (https://highdesertmuseum.org/tag/forest-fire/). Forests need fire to stay healthy, but policies of fire suppression have made forests vulnerable to high-intensity fires.
