There are two roads shown here. The one far to the right tells you constantly where and how fast you should go. It is paved and relatively easy to drive. The one in the center has no such directions. It is not paved, and although it appears relatively easy to drive on at first, the terrain becomes very rough as you proceed. You will also come upon crossroads leading in several directions, but no sign is posted indicating which way to go. This is why I enjoy traveling in the area. While most of my life is spent in an urban and regulated manner, it is invigorating to experience the relative freedom one has in the Great Basin. Vistas that go for miles, few cars, few people, and little technology, all of which result in an astounding silence. The silence is one of the greatest gifts one can experience, and it costs nothing.

Fremont Cottonwood (Populus fremontii)

Nevada Ephedra (Ephedra Nevadensis)

Rabbitbrush. Either Yellow Rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus) or Rubber Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa)

Western Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis)

These images were captured with the Nikon F100, with either the Nikkor 50mm F1.2 lens or the Voitlander Color-Skopar F2.8 Lens. I developed the film with Cinestill’s C-41 color developer. I scanned the negatives with the PrimeFilmXEs using SilverFast 9 SE, with the Portra 160 setting.
