It’s Saturday afternoon. It is partly cloudy with scattered showers, a beautiful summer day. I had the Nikon F100 with me, loaded with Flic Film Elektra 100. The Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 lens was mounted on the camera.

I had not shot this film before, so I thought a visit to a community garden would give me an idea of how it looked.

When I arrived, I saw that the garden was fenced in. I found a gate with an open padlock and went in. A woman was tending the compost pile. She told me the garden was locked when no one was working on their plots and that she was leaving in 5 minutes. Otherwise, people would come into the area and take the vegetables and flowers.

So I began. I thought I could walk through the garden and capture what interested me, but I was wrong.

Every plant was screaming for my attention! Look at me… look at my colors! I am the prettiest of all!

The five minutes were up. I saw the woman preparing to leave, but a couple had arrived and were going to tend their plot. I relaxed and returned to the garden; I could feel the plants breathe a sigh of relief.

The small flowers were the loudest. Do not forget about us!

I finished the roll of film and prepared to leave. There were still plants that had not received any attention. They did not understand that film is not digital; their disappointment was obvious.

I developed the film in Cinestill’s C-41 kit. I scanned the negatives with the PrimeFilmXEs using VueScan.

  1. Nice to read your story of the experience alongside the captured treasures. I did throw a massive variety of wildflower seeds at our garden last year. So can now understand your conundrum of so many choices to catch on film. Nice framing and DoF again Steven. So pleased you started this colour developing journey. Fabulous results.
