It is around noon on Monday. Temperatures are in the upper 50s with a brisk wind. While most of the state is hot, the coast is under a blanket of dense fog. In the hour or so I spent on the beach, I saw a total of 8 people.

These images were captured using the Nikon F100 and the Nikon 20mm f/2.8D lens.

I inadvertently pushed the roll one stop. I developed the film in Rodinal (1:25) for 10 minutes, 30 seconds. I scanned the film with the PrimeFilmXEs using VueScan.

  1. Great set of photos, Steven. The beautiful and course film grain really adds to the foggy atmosphere nicely. If there’s one thing I can’t stand in photographs it’s a lack of organic texture, especially in skies and areas with smooth gradients. Hence the reason I really, really dislike digital.

    1. I agree. The lack of texture loses something in the scene. But, we have to consider that we old-timers learned to appreciate photographs in the film era. In 20+ years, today’s kids will have mostly been weaned on digital perfection, complete with its gazillion megapixels and perfect white balance, perfect focus, perfect exposure (what is a perfect exposure?).

Surprisingly, still today, some of the old guys who switched to digital are still fighting the film versus digital fight, as if they are still trying to justify why they switched. Baffling.
