There is a small wetland and forested area behind Safeway, which is on the corner of Harrison and Cooper Point Road in Olympia. There are signs posted to keep out of the area. The area is considered critical habitat.

For many years, homeless people have lived here. Recently, the city cleared the camp out of the area. Saturday, I walked through the area.

In the center of the camp, there was a clearing with large Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees surrounding it.

The area still has not been cleaned up. There is trash and the remnants of campfires.

The trees have damage from fire, and many of them have sap streams, a result of inflicted damage. Those sap streams are going to save these trees (https://naturechronicles.wordpress.com/douglas-firs-and-sap-streams-natures-defense/).

These images were created with the Nikon Z5, with the Nikkor Z 50mm 1:1.4 Lens attached.
Thankfully trees are quite resilient, sadly we humans treat them so badly.

I did not know that homeless camped in that area. I’m glad they were cleared away. I hope permanently. Maybe the trees will recover.

These areas are everywhere in the remaining woods of Olympia. The areas are being cleared. The Percival Creek Camp is the worst area in town and so fat nothing is being done.
