We took the I-5 when we traveled to Los Angeles in April. These images were created the morning after a stay at a hotel in Kettleman City. Instead of returning to the highway, I traveled along 25th Avenue, which paralleled the highway for a few minutes. I would call the area semi-arid, with much of it used for agricultural needs.

The California Aqueduct follows this road in the area (https://www.watereducation.org/aquapedia/california-aqueduct). It directs water from Northern California to Southern California’s farms and population centers.

People drown every year in the Aqueduct. In an 11-year time period ending in 2018, over one hundred people died (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4UJJzMlQ9g). If you research, you will find the deaths have not stopped.

Climate, Pest Control, and Economics create vast acreage where fruit trees have been uprooted. Eventually, when it is economically feasible, they will be removed. In some cases, the trees dry out enough to be harvested as firewood.

I used the Nikon N90s with the Nikkor 50mm 1:1.2 lens to capture these images. I developed the film with Cinestill’s C-41 kit. I scanned the negatives with the PrimeFilm XEs using VueScan.
