On my return from Los Angeles, my wife and I drove through the Great Basin. These images were created in Nevada and Oregon. On this trip, I wanted to see how Harman’s new film, Phoenix II, handled the landscape.

Larrea tridentat. Creosote. Above and below is the Creosote. This plant grows in Southern Nevada and the Mojave Desert, from sea level to about 5,000 ft (1,500 m).

This specimen is the largest Creosote bush I have ever seen. It was about 15 feet (4.6 meters) across. Sometimes the plant will clone another plant with its root system. This bush may be a combination of several bushes created in that way.

Carex filifolia. Thread-leaf Sedge.

Reclamation

Senna covesii. Desert senna. This identification is in question. There are a few bushes with bright yellow flowers but this is the only one I know that blooms in April. The others bloom in August.

Open Range signs along the highway are reminders that you are traveling through an open range area where there may be no fences for keeping cattle or other livestock off the highway. Since laws for open rangeland were established long before highways were built, livestock in these areas have the right-of-way. It’s your responsibility to watch out for them. Open range areas are located throughout central and eastern Oregon so it is best to assume you are driving through one, even ifdon’tdon’t see a sign. The Oregon Department of Transportation would like to ask that you buckle up, slow down, drive without distractions, and be sure to be extra cautious at night or during other low light driving conditions when a black cow could be nearly invisible.

Sarcobatus vermiculatus. Greasewood.

These images were created with the Nikon N90s, with either the Nikkor 50mm 1:1.2 or the Nikon D 28mm 1:2.8 Lens attached. I developed the film with Cinestill’s C-41 developer. I scanned the negatives with the PrimeFilmXEs using VueScan.
